The Carbon Footprint of Food You Never Eat

What the UN’s Food Waste Index Report 2024 found — and why most of it happens at home

🥬 The emissions are already spent

Every item of food carries the emissions of the farm, the fertiliser, the processing, the cold chain and the drive home before it reaches your kitchen. If it ends up in the bin, all of that was spent for nothing — and then the waste itself has to be dealt with. That makes wasted food one of the few carbon costs you pay twice without ever getting anything for it.

The report

The Food Waste Index Report 2024, published by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and co-authored with the UK charity WRAP, is the most comprehensive global estimate of food wasted at the retail, food service and household levels. It is built to track progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, which aims to halve per-capita food waste by 2030, and it draws on considerably more national data than the first edition, published in 2021.

It measures food waste, which is distinct from food loss: the report separately cites an estimated 13% of food lost in the supply chain between harvest and the point of sale. The figures below are about what happens after that — in shops, restaurants and homes.

It is not a rich-country problem

The finding that most contradicts common intuition is how flat household waste is across income groups. The long-standing assumption was that wealthy households waste and poorer ones do not. The 2024 data does not support that: the observed averages for high-income, upper-middle-income and lower-middle-income countries sit within 7 kg per person of one another.

The report does describe other patterns. Hotter countries appear to generate more household food waste per person, which the authors link to more fresh food being eaten and to gaps in cold storage. In middle-income countries, rural households generally waste less than urban ones, with one suggested explanation being that scraps are more often fed to pets and livestock or composted at home. The practical implication is that food waste is a near-universal household habit rather than a lifestyle quirk of a particular group.

Why the kitchen matters more than the supermarket

Retail waste tends to get the headlines — the skips behind supermarkets, the unsold bakery shelves at closing time. But in this dataset, retail accounts for 12% of the total, while homes account for 60%. The largest single lever is the one inside individual households, which is also the one nobody else can see.

Measurement is the recurring theme of the report. It notes that only four G20 countries — Australia, Japan, the UK and the USA — plus the European Union had estimates suitable for tracking progress to 2030, and it points to Japan and the UK as examples where measured reductions have been achieved. The underlying logic is simple: what is not measured tends not to be managed, at national scale or at kitchen scale.

What this means for your own footprint

A personal carbon estimate usually counts food as eaten. Wasted food quietly inflates that figure, because the emissions of the portion you threw away were already incurred when you bought it. The highest-carbon foods — beef, lamb, cheese — are the ones where waste costs the most, so a forgotten piece of meat carries far more emissions than a forgotten bag of carrots.

General, low-effort habits follow from that: buying closer to what you will actually eat, checking what is already in the fridge before shopping, planning uses for leftovers, and treating date labels as guidance rather than a verdict where it is safe to do so. None of these requires changing what you eat — only how much of it reaches the plate.

Two caveats are worth stating. The global tonnage includes inedible parts such as bones and peels, so not all of it is avoidable. And national estimates vary in quality, which the report itself highlights as a gap. The headline shares and the flat income pattern are the robust takeaways; country-by-country comparisons are less certain.
