Which Lifestyle Changes Cut the Most Carbon?
What a systematic review of 6,990 studies found
🔬 The study
In 2020, a team led by Diana Ivanova published “Quantifying the potential for climate change mitigation of consumption options” in Environmental Research Letters. Rather than running a new model, the authors did something unusual: they gathered the existing evidence and ranked it.
They screened 6,990 records from the Web of Science and Scopus databases, extracted 771 individual consumption options, and consolidated them into 61 options with a measurable positive mitigation potential — across food, housing, transport, and other consumption.
Why household choices matter at all
The review opens with a figure worth sitting with: around two-thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions are directly or indirectly linked to household consumption. “Indirectly” is the important word. It counts not just the fuel burned in your car or boiler, but the emissions embodied in the food, goods, and services you buy — the factory, the freight, the farm.
That framing does not shift responsibility away from industry and policy; the emissions are generated by producers. But it does mean consumption patterns are a large lever, and the review set out to work out which parts of that lever actually move.
The options with the largest potential
The headline result: the top ten consumption options together carry an average mitigation potential of about 9.2 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent per person per year. For context, the site's own reference target — the IPCC-aligned level consistent with 1.5°C — is around 2 tonnes per person per year.

Grouped by domain, the pattern is consistent. In transport, the largest potentials came from living car-free, switching to a battery electric vehicle, and flying less. In food, dietary shifts toward plant-based eating led. In housing, the leaders were switching to renewable electricity and renovating the building itself.
Three things the ranking teaches
1. The distribution is steep
Of 61 options with positive potential, a handful account for most of the achievable reduction. A great deal of popular advice sits far down the list. This is not an argument for ignoring small actions — it is an argument for knowing which is which before you spend your effort.
2. Context changes the number
The authors report medians precisely because the underlying estimates vary widely. Switching to an electric vehicle saves far more where the grid is coal-heavy than where it is already low-carbon — and if you rarely drive, the option barely applies to you. A number drawn from a study population is a starting point, not a personal result.
3. Measurement has to come first
Every option in the review is a difference between two states. You cannot act on a difference you have not measured. Knowing your own split between food, travel, and home energy tells you which row of the table is actually yours — and most people guess that split wrong, typically underweighting home energy and flights.
