Frequently Asked Questions

How does the AI meal scanner work?

Tap the camera icon in the Food tab and snap a photo of your meal. Decarbonr sends the image to GPT-4 Vision, which identifies the ingredients and returns CO₂e estimates based on Poore & Nemecek (2018) emission factors. You'll see a full ingredient-level breakdown and suggested lower-carbon alternatives.

How do I scan a product barcode?

Go to the Food tab and tap the barcode icon. Point your camera at any product barcode. The app looks up the product in OpenFoodFacts (2.9M+ products) and calculates its carbon footprint per serving or per 100g.

What transport modes does travel tracking support?

Decarbonr tracks 9 transport modes: airplane, car (diesel, petrol, electric), train, bus, cruise ship, bicycle, and walking. Flights and cruises auto-calculate distance from your departure and arrival cities. Trains use country-specific electricity grid emission factors for accuracy.

What does the daily CO₂e goal mean?

The Paris Agreement target for 1.5°C warming is ~2 tonnes CO₂e per person per year, which equals about 5.48 kg per day. Decarbonr sets this as your default goal and lets you customize it based on your lifestyle, country, and personal ambitions. The dashboard progress gauge shows how you're tracking in real time.

What lifestyle categories can I track beyond food and travel?

Decarbonr covers 12+ categories including heating & electricity (with country-specific grid factors), water usage, waste & recycling, digital footprint (streaming, devices, cloud), consumables (electronics, clothing, furniture), entertainment, pet care, home maintenance, and healthcare.

Is my data private? Does the app need an account?

No account required. All your tracking data is stored locally on your device using iOS SwiftData — it never leaves your phone. The only external calls are anonymous barcode lookups to OpenFoodFacts and AI photo analysis to OpenAI. We don't collect, sell, or share your personal data.

Does the app work offline?

Most features work offline, including manual food logging, travel logging, the dashboard, history, and the education library. Barcode scanning and AI photo analysis require an internet connection (they call external APIs). Previously fetched product data is cached locally.

How do I delete an entry?

Go to the History tab, find the entry you want to remove, and swipe left to delete it. You can also delete all entries from the Settings tab.

What is the climate education library?

The Tools & Education tab contains five sections: Education (CO₂e fundamentals, climate science), Plan & Calculate (carbon budget calculator, what-if scenarios), Learn & Test (daily facts, personalized tips, quizzes, myth busting), Act & Improve (action plans, world map comparisons), and Deep Dives (success stories, Scope 1–3 accounting, policy analysis).

How accurate are the carbon footprint estimates?

All estimates are based on peer-reviewed research — primarily Poore & Nemecek (2018), the most comprehensive food emissions study covering 38,000+ farms across 119 countries, plus the IPCC, EEA, Ecoinvent, and Our World in Data. That said, individual products vary. Use Decarbonr as an awareness and decision-support tool, not an exact meter. See our Research page for full source details.
